John’s journey with Celtic began in 1960 when he first donned the Hoops jersey. The following year, he made his debut in a memorable 2-0 league victory against Hibernian. Over the course of the next four years, John graced the pitch 44 times for Celtic, showcasing his skills and scoring four significant goals.
It was the legendary Jock Stein who brought John to Hibernian in April 1964. This decision was influenced by their prior working relationship at Celtic, where Jock had been a reserve coach. However, fate intervened when Jock Stein departed Easter Road less than a year later to take the helm as Celtic manager.
Transitioning from Hibernian to Newcastle United in 1966, John played a pivotal role in the Magpies’ successful 1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup campaign, marking an illustrious chapter in his football career. His passion for the sport saw him don jerseys of other clubs like Blackburn Rovers, Hartlepool United, Lancaster City, and Workington before bidding adieu to professional football in 1976.
During this poignant time, our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to John’s cherished family and friends. In a solemn gesture of respect and remembrance, the Celtic players will wear black armbands in today’s game against Ross County to pay tribute to the memory and legacy of the esteemed former Celt, John McNamee.
