Szalai, who was once considered one of the most promising young center-backs in the game, ultimately chose to stay with Fenerbahce and later joined Hoffenheim in a £10 million deal. However, his time in Germany was disappointing, with Szalai making only seven Bundesliga appearances in 18 months and being loaned out to Freiburg. He has now been farmed out again, joining Standard Liege in Belgium on loan until the end of the season.
Szalai’s decline has been dramatic, with German publication Buli News labeling him “one of the biggest transfer flops” in recent Bundesliga history. His debut for Hoffenheim was disastrous, with Szalai scoring an own goal and being hauled off at half-time. Despite his professional attitude, Szalai’s quality has been called into question, and it’s clear that he has not lived up to his potential.
In hindsight, it’s possible that Szalai needed to join Leeds United and work with Bielsa in order to reach his full potential. Bielsa’s coaching style and ability to improve players may have been exactly what Szalai needed to take his game to the next level. Instead, Szalai’s career has stalled, and he is now playing in Belgium on loan.
