Michael Maguire’s squad is grappling with a salary cap constraint and must identify resources to retain key players like Kotoni Staggs, Selwyn Cobbo, and several others. The Broncos had intended for Reynolds’ $550,000 contract to expire in 2026, thereby creating room to re-sign other players.
However, the impressive start to the season by the 34-year-old has caused him to rethink his retirement intentions, with the seasoned halfback reportedly leaning toward extending his playing career into next year. Given the Broncos’ financial situation, compounded by substantial contracts given to Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, and Ezra Mam, it appears Reynolds may need to seek a new team.
News Corp reported this weekend that Hull Kingston Rovers have shown interest in acquiring Reynolds for a stint in England, and he has little inclination to return to Sydney following his time with the Rabbitohs. This move would require relocating his young family, as they have developed a deep affection for their new home since moving from Sydney in 2022.
“We sought a change in lifestyle,” Reynolds shared with the Courier Mail in February regarding the family’s decision to move to Brisbane with his wife Tallara and their four children, aged 15, 14, 10, and 7. “We desired a larger house with ample yard space for the kids and the dogs, a place where they could play freely.
“Honestly, it was challenging initially to leave everything we knew, our friends and family in Sydney, and the kids were somewhat anxious about departing from their old friends at school, uncertain about the new environment. However, from the instant we announced our move, the community welcomed us with open arms.
“It has been a fantastic change; we’ve felt incredibly embraced here, the connections we’ve formed, and the kids truly enjoy it. They aren’t inclined to return to Sydney. Brisbane is now their home, and it is ours too. We are very content with the decision we made. “
Ben Hunt discusses a $2.2 million transfer with his wife. On Triple M radio Sunday, Reynolds expressed his desire to prolong his playing career. “The plan is to continue playing,” he stated. “I will keep all my options available for now. You never know what opportunities may arise. Ideally, I would love to remain with the Broncos, but things are quite tight at the moment. If circumstances align, fantastic. If not, I will have to explore other avenues. ”
To prepare for a future without Reynolds, the Broncos already signed Ben Hunt to a two-year contract. Should Reynolds depart, they would utilize Hunt and Mam in the halves for the 2026 season.
Notably, Hunt has completely cut his remaining connections to Sydney by putting his Caringbah South residence on the market with his wife Bridget. The Hunt family resided in the Sutherland area during his tenure with the Dragons, but they have since moved to Brisbane and are asking for $2.2 million for their Sydney property. This indicates that Hunt does not plan to return to Sydney anytime soon, which may suggest he intends to continue playing with the Broncos beyond 2026 as well.
Selwyn Cobbo’s tenure with the Broncos seems to be nearly at an end following the club’s announcement regarding the re-signing of Josiah Karapani, while outside back Grant Anderson will be joining Brisbane from the Storm, just a week after the club confirmed that Kotoni Staggs would remain for the long term.
Cobbo was a contender for State of Origin selection just weeks prior but has since lost favor, having been demoted to reserve grade and now likely set to depart the club after this season.
Karapani has stepped into his position on the wing and scored two essential tries in last week’s comeback victory over the Sharks, with his impressive performance earning him a new two-year contract.
