AdminNovak Djokovic commenced his grass season with a 7-6, 6-4 setback against Karen Khachanov at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic on Friday, marking his sole match on that surface prior to his Wimbledon journey. The sixth-ranked player has continued to challenge himself at the All England Club, partaking in a practice session on Centre Court with Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday.
However, Djokovic admitted feeling “bad” for disturbing the immaculate grass at SW19 during his practice set with Alcaraz, which concluded at 5-5 before their designated time had elapsed.
Following his exhibition match loss at Hurlingham, Djokovic reflected on his practice with Alcaraz, a rematch between the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon finals. Until recent years, players were prohibited from practicing on Centre Court before the tournament began, but this tradition has evolved to ensure the grass remains less slippery for the first day.
Nevertheless, Djokovic is still coming to terms with this decision and harbors regrets about “damaging” the grass before the fortnight of Championships.
After his defeat at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, he remarked: “Of course, yesterday I was practicing with Carlos, and obviously the tradition has changed in the last few years to allow players to hit a few balls on Centre Court. I thought that tradition would remain unchanged, but I suppose times are evolving. It’s certainly a great honor to stand on pristine grass before the tournament kicks off.
“To be honest, it felt a little odd, and I felt somewhat guilty for ruining the grass and sliding on it.” It is understandable that Djokovic felt this way. He grew up gazing at Wimbledon on television as a child, dreaming of claiming the trophy. Now he boasts seven Wimbledon titles. Despite nearly two years since his last Major victory, he remains intensely driven to secure his eighth at SW19.
“It’s among the most extraordinary tennis courts globally. Wimbledon Centre Court is like a sanctuary; it’s something revered by us,” he continued.
“It truly inspires you to step out and enjoy the moment, embracing all you encounter while giving your best. I can’t identify a more motivating tournament in my life than Wimbledon, which is truly exhilarating. ”
Apart from his exhibition at Hurlingham, Djokovic has not competed since his semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner at the French Open earlier this month. However, he has been quite active and was captivated by the thrilling championship showdown between Sinner and Alcaraz in Paris.
“There’s a lot happening in my personal life, and I strive to find a balance with my professional life. I continue to seek joy on the courts, participate in competitions, and of course, Wimbledon has always been a childhood dream tournament for me and many others. ”
