AdminFormer international rugby player from New Zealand and Samoa, Martin Taupau, asserts that his career in rugby league is far from over, revealing he is aiming for a return mid-season ahead of the NRL transfer cutoff on June 30.
The 35-year-old was released by the Brisbane Broncos in May after expressing support for a social media post that criticized head coach Michael Maguire. Taupau admits this decision was a tough blow. “It was definitely a punch in the face,” he expressed to Code Sports.
“You have to take a moment to breathe and acknowledge what has happened, and concentrate on what lies ahead and what you can control. That’s where personal development occurs… There’s a purpose behind everything. ”
Despite his silence following the incident leading many to speculate whether his career was at an end, Taupau asserts he is far from done.
“I’m absolutely not retiring,” he stated. “I’m continuing the training regimen I was following at the Broncos. It’s all about maintaining routine and consistency. ”
The robust player expressed optimism that opportunities will arise.
“If nothing materializes, we’ll recalibrate – it’s simply a different direction. ”
Although there have been no formal connections, the Super League has been suggested as a likely next chapter.
On The Bloke in a Bar podcast, former Super League player Justin Horo labeled the Broncos’ decision as “super harsh” and mentioned that Taupau could “thrive in the Super League” if he doesn’t find another opportunity in the NRL.
In the past, Taupau has been associated with Super League teams, yet those discussions never developed into anything concrete.
With the NRL’s June 30 deadline rapidly approaching—this being the last date for clubs to register new players or execute transfers for the season—his circumstances remain intriguing.
Nonetheless, if Taupau fails to secure a position in the NRL before the deadline, he retains the option to explore opportunities in the Super League, which will allow transfers until August 1.
In the meantime, the global celebrity informed Code Sports that he has been occupied starting a stationery venture alongside his wife, Michelle.
He also aspires to introduce a school-oriented initiative focused on social media awareness in classrooms, drawing from his personal experiences as a warning.
“It’s all about maintaining self-awareness,” he remarked. “Even a seemingly minor action like a like can create a significant effect. ”
No matter where his journey takes him, Taupau asserts that one thing is certain – he’s far from finished!
