NRL hall-of-famer Steve Renouf has expressed regret after reportedly registering nearly four times the legal blood alcohol level during a roadside breath test (RBT) on Tuesday night.
Authorities have released a statement regarding the incident, which took place at approximately 10:45 PM AEST on July 1, close to the Brisbane Broncos headquarters on Fulcher Rd.
“Police stopped a white Kia K4 on Windsor Road, Red Hill for a routine licence check and roadside breath test (RBT),” the statement detailed. It is claimed that the driver, a 55-year-old man from Red Hill and the only occupant of the vehicle, returned a positive reading. ”
Renouf is not only an icon for the Broncos, but he has also represented the Australian Kangaroos team 11 times.
He participated in four premiership victories with the Broncos during the 1990s and still holds the record for the club’s greatest try scorer, with a total of 142.
“Following the stop, he was taken to Brisbane City Watchhouse, where he registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.197 percent,” the police reported.
Additionally, Renouf is a father of five and has faced a prominent struggle with type-1 diabetes.
After the story became public, he took to Instagram to share his apology.
“I recognize and accept that my behavior was unacceptable,” the 55-year-old stated. “I have disappointed my family, the supporters of the Broncos, the rugby league community, the people of Queensland, and my own people.
“I sincerely apologize for my actions and feel embarrassed and let down by myself.
“I will face the consequences of my actions and strive to improve. ”
Law enforcement has suspended Renouf’s driving privileges and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol.
He is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 16.
On June 2, Broncos media manager Melissa Mallet also faced a serious drink driving charge in Paddington.
Mallet allegedly crashed into two parked vehicles while intoxicated. She has yet to enter a plea.
Even though he is a celebrated figure at the club, Renouf does not hold an official role with the Broncos.
