Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington has chosen to sign only a one-year extension with the team under coach Michael Maguire, declining a longer-term contract, which raises questions about his future. In recent weeks, Hetherington has found himself on the bench as Patrick Carrigan has returned to the lock position and Xavier Willison has taken up prop. The Broncos have gained an advantage from the added size in the front row along with Hetherington’s strong work ethic off the bench. Maguire has sought to secure the 26-year-old for an additional season as he signed a one-year contract. However, The Courier Mail has reported that Hetherington’s agent asserted that the player turned down a two-year offer to maintain flexibility for the future.

While the Broncos are likely pleased to have secured Hetherington, he may be evaluating his options with the Perth Bears set to join the league in 2027. Mal Meninga will coach the Bears, who will be assembling a roster over the coming year. Although players like Ryan Papenhuyzen and Jahrome Hughes have been mentioned as potential big signings, the Bears will have ample financial resources to attract other players. Hetherington might be contemplating future opportunities if a more lucrative offer arises after his one-year contract.

Starting November 1 of this year, Hetherington will be able to engage with competing teams as he gets ready for another contract. Hetherington’s manager, Chris Haddad, expressed satisfaction with taking on a short-term agreement. “It’s a great outcome,” Haddad told the publication. “Kobe is pleased with the Broncos, so we are satisfied with extending for one year and will see where it leads us afterwards.

“The Broncos proposed a two-year contract, but we felt comfortable with another 12 months so Kobe can continue to test himself. He could have departed the Broncos, as several clubs in Sydney were interested in him, but after discussions with ‘Madge’ (Maguire), he wanted the opportunity to work with Kobe, and he enjoys being coached by Madge. ”
