HOW WILL THE BRONCOS FIX THEIR BIG HALFBACK PROBLEM?
In one game, both halfbacks got hurt. This is a real disaster for Michael Maguire and the Broncos. Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam both had to leave the match against the Storm after hurting their hamstrings while trying to catch Xavier Coates.
Losing one of your playmakers is bad, but losing two is really serious. It’s almost enough to make you think they won’t have a chance to win the championship anymore.
Also, winger Selwyn Cobbo hurt his hamstring, but Maguire has Jesse Arthars or Josiah Karapani ready to take his spot.
Reynolds is expected to be back in time for the finals, but it looks like Mam and Cobbo won’t be playing again this season.
Ben Hunt will fill one halfback position, but it’s unclear who else will join him as he has experience playing in a different role.
After the game, Maguire said he’s never seen so many injuries to his team in just one match.
“It’s odd that all three injuries are hamstrings because the players usually manage their training well during the week,” he said.
“There’s no clear reason for this. . . but we’ll investigate further.
“It was really surprising, I’ve never been through something like that.
“I have to give credit to the players for handling it well. They fought really hard in that game, which shows the character they’ve been building.
“They showed their toughness because they had to.”
As for who might step in to help, Maguire is optimistic that the Broncos can still push for the title.
“We’ll be fine, we have backup players,” Maguire said.
“This is part of our growth; we have been able to bring in some new faces and make some adjustments. We’ll figure it out during the week. ”
Some possible replacements include young players Coby Black, Josh Rogers, and Jock Madden.
Black has managed eight assists and scored five tries in 15 games for the Souths Logan Magpies in the QLD Cup this season.
However, moving the young playmaker into a bigger role so late in the season could be risky according to club legend Darren Lockyer.
“I think bringing Coby in now is a big gamble when it comes to winning important games because he’s still very young,” he said on Channel 9.
I believe that Ben Hunt should play in the No.7 position and maybe Billy Walters will take the No.6 spot. You could also add Cory Paix and Tyson Smoothy to work together as your hookers.
“This is what I think at the moment, but if Madge has other ideas, Coby could be a chance to see how talented he really is.”
