A devastating accident has claimed the life of Joshua Darst, a senior student-athlete from Cornerstone University in Michigan, who was interning at the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament.
According to police, Darst fell from a motorized cart near the loading dock area of the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Monday evening, the closing day of the event. He was quickly taken to West Chester Hospital, but tragically, he did not survive.
Darst, a scholarship baseball player at Cornerstone, was remembered by his pastor, Brian McManus of Tri-County Baptist Church, as a young man full of empathy and kindness. “He had only been working at the Open for three weeks, but the impact he made on others in that short time was profound,” McManus said.
His parents intend to honor his memory by creating a baseball scholarship fund at his university. The Cincinnati Open issued a statement expressing its sorrow, noting that the entire tournament organization was heartbroken by the loss.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
