AdminThe Texas Rangers made a pair of roster moves on Saturday, announcing that veteran infielder Marcus Semien has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left foot contusion. The transaction is retroactive to August 22. To fill the roster spot, outfielder Adolis García was activated from the injured list.
Semien had been battling foot soreness for several days, but his placement on the IL still comes as a surprise given his remarkable track record of durability. Since becoming a full-time player with Oakland in 2015, the 34-year-old has appeared in nearly 94% of his teams’ games, missing significant time only once — in 2017, when a wrist sprain limited him to 85 contests. Outside of that season, he’s played at least 155 games in every full campaign.
While his overall offensive numbers this year remain below his usual standard (88 wRC+), Semien has quietly turned his season around. After a difficult first two months, he has posted a strong .270/.338/.464 slash line with a 122 wRC+ since May 30, adding value with both his defense and baserunning. He has accumulated 2.1 fWAR so far in 2025.
With Semien sidelined until at least August 31, Ezequiel Duran and Cody Freeman have been handling duties at second base, with utility player Josh Smith also expected to see time at the position now that García has returned to the outfield mix.
García, who had been out with a sprained ankle, will look to rebound from what has been a difficult campaign. In 116 games, he’s hit just .224/.266/.388 with a 79 wRC+, far below his All-Star caliber performance from prior years. Without a late-season surge, García may enter the offseason as a non-tender candidate.
Meanwhile, the Rangers also received a setback on the pitching side. Veteran reliever Chris Martin, sidelined since late July with a calf strain, was forced to cut short his latest bullpen session after experiencing renewed discomfort. Manager Bruce Bochy described the issue as a “little setback,” though with September approaching, Martin’s window to return this season is narrowing. The 38-year-old has been a reliable bullpen option when healthy, posting a 2.36 ERA in 39 outings.
